The right AC does three things, controls the temperature, manages humidity, and keeps the place breathable. In the summer season, the heat and humidity is hard to ignore and having the right unit is more crucial than people actually realize. Get it wrong and you’re either sweating the intense heat or your electricity bills are through the roof.
Split ACs and Window ACs are the two popular choices homeowners end up with. They have differences in how they perform, their cost to run, how much maintenance in a year is needed and the installation process. Knowing where one wins and where it falls is the most important homework to do before buying an Air conditioner and it makes the difference between a purchase you’re happy with and one you regret buying later.
The window AC has a self contained unit which is installed in a window, hence the name “Window AC”. The main function they perform is that everything is packed into one box, the compressor, the fan and the cooling coil.
The installation is quite simple, the AC is installed in a window (or sometimes through a wall), seal the edges, plug it in and voila. It doesn’t require any additional outdoor complicated setup which makes a good choice for people who want a compact AC without having to go through a long installation process.
The split AC divides the system into two units, the indoor and the outdoor. The indoor unit is attached to the wall in the room, while the outdoor unit sits outside and handles the heat exhausting by the system. Both units are attached through copper pipes and electrical wiring. Split ACs look clean with the separate systems, keeping the window clear.
Both systems have, in principle, catching heat particles from the room and releasing it out. This process allows the indoors to be cool and humidity free but the question is which one should you prefer to invest on if both does the same job?
Appearance: The design and aesthetic of split AC makes it a cleaner option because it keeps the window clear which is a factor in modern homes and offices. Meanwhile Window Acs are very bulky, they block natural light and stick out from a wall. It does the job but not quite pleasant to look at.
Cost: The one unit system of the window AC makes them a cheaper option, plus there is no installation cost either so people who are on a tight budget and do not care about the aesthetics may prefer the window AC just to spend the summers in comfort.
Split ACs cost more upfront, but with the inverter options available it can save electricity and in the long term could prove to be a good investment.
Noise: The compressor being in the same unit creates quite a noticeable and loud noise, the constant mechanical sound is especially hard to ignore. That’s where window ACs lose most points because imagine your sleep being disrupted constantly due to the AC noise. On the other hand, split ACs keep all the noise outside, keeping the indoor unit noise free.
Cooling efficiency: While the window ACs do the cooling job, they struggle in large rooms, such as office areas, conference rooms or halls. They’re good enough for small rooms. Split ACs have a stronger mechanical efficiency so they work better in large room settings.
Maintenance: Window ACs are easier to maintain, the cleaning and filtering is in one place. Split ACs need periodic cleaning and servicing.
Window ACs are not obsolete (yet), they’re practical for the right situation. A small room and tight budgets makes it a good option. But for most homeowners, split AC is a better investment.
